How long is the commute, really?
Scheduled train time is the smallest part of it. Build the whole trip, walk, wait, train, transfer, walk, and compare two ways of doing it.
How this is worked out
- One way: the minutes you enter for getting to the station, waiting and parking, the train itself, any transfer, getting from the station to your desk, and anything extra. They are added up. Nothing is assumed.
- Per week and per year: one way, twice a day, times the days you go in, times 48 working weeks.
No timetable data is built in, because train times change. Read the current schedule for your station from NJ Transit. Until November 14, 2026 weekday Midtown Direct trains on the Morristown Line, Gladstone Branch and Montclair-Boonton Line end at Hoboken (NJ Transit Portal Bridge cutover), which adds a PATH or ferry leg. What is door-to-door commute time?
It is the whole trip from your front door to your desk: getting to the station, waiting and parking, the train, any transfer, and the walk or subway at the other end. The scheduled train time is only one piece of it.
What is the difference between a one-seat ride and a Newark transfer?
A one-seat ride is a single train all the way into Manhattan. A transfer means changing trains, often at Newark or Hoboken, which adds a wait and the risk of a missed connection. The builder lets you enter the transfer minutes so the difference shows in hours per year.
Why does the Hoboken diversion matter?
Until November 14, 2026 weekday Midtown Direct trains end at Hoboken instead of New York Penn Station, so riders continue by PATH, ferry or bus. Enter that extra leg to see how it changes your total.
